June 20 Basement Bathroom

June 20, 2010 - Basement

We hated the basement carpet so Jeff ripped it out on Day 2 -- apparently the basement still leaks so we see sealant in our future.  After removing the carpet, we ripped out the show mold and then went to Home Depot to buy a solution to "clean & etch" the floor.  The stuff was potent enough to remove most of the carpet glue but the color of the concrete was near black in places.  We went through a few semi-transparent stains and ended up with a gray opaque epoxy paint.  Bad choice.  We will be redoing this soon -- most likely with tile throughout.

We had the ceiling in the stairway skim coated as well as the bedroom and family room to remove the popcorn finish.

We removed the stair treads (which showed much wear after having carpet on them) and flipped them over and reattached them so as not to have to purchase new treads.  We painted the treads high gloss black -- we also painted the handrail high gloss black.

We removed all of the window treatments and relocated the lighting to the basement sink and shower area.  Jeff picked out the paint colors.  (I am not a fan of his southwestern hues.)

Found some bronze outlet covers for the bathroom on Ebay for $10...they look okay.

We pressure washed the exterior of the house and decks ($200).  Found that the front porch ceiling, columns, and trim were rotten so we replaced the base wood on the 4 columns ($600), the ceiling, trim & painted the shutters and all wood ($400).

Painters broke a window, got paint all over front porch, and the shutters still have some splatter - will get around to repainting later.

We found a new iron knocker at the Restoration Hardware outlet for $50 and painted the door Sherwin Williams' WS2907 Scarlet.  Painting the door was only $50.

The deck stain is pretty nasty.  We pressured washed the heck out of it to remove the stain.  The decks are in rough shape -- Jeff wants us to replace them ourselves.  Um, not so sure about that - literally 500 sf of decking.
